Wrong Oil Pump Gasket Thickness
I have a 1964 Cadillac Series 62 with a 429 and the oil pump went out. I ordered a new oil pump gear drive set from Kanter and they shipped me a kit with a .008 thick gasket. However, after I installed the pump I realized the damage was already done to the engine and had to do a complete engine rebuild. I then ordered this kit from Kanter and installed on the engine. After priming the engine, we were not getting any oil pressure at all. One of the gentlemen helping me work on the car said he had seen a post online about a guy doing a complete engine rebuild and not getting any oil pressure either. He found out that the gasket he installed was too thick and when he put the correct gasket on, boom, oil pressure. Kanter included 2 gaskets for the oil pump in this kit. We measured the thickness, and instead of .008, which Kanter had previously sold me with their new oil pump kit, it was .037! The oil was bypassing under the gears. We changed the gasket and boom, oil pressure. For the life of me, I cannot understand why Kanter would sell a complete engine gasket kit for a 1964-1967 Cadillac 429 engine that has incorrect thickness gasket for the oil pump???? I cannot be the only person who has run into this issue. Maybe Kanter needs to look at what they are selling. Otherwise, I could have wound up with the same issue that lead me down this path in the first place.
